Raffi Iskenderian and Jeff Cohen have been business partners since 2009. They currently operate three home improvement businesses with locations at 39 Union Avenue in Sudbury and 287 Salem Street in Woburn. Jeff and Raffi met at Capital One in 2005, working in a part of the company that offered consumers 0% financing solutions for their home improvement projects. Through that lens they saw the good, the bad, and the ugly in the home improvement space, and determined that there was an opportunity in the market for businesses that provided great customer service and a great place to work. Capital One shut down the division in 2009, and Jeff and Raffi felt that the bottom of the recession was a perfect time to start a home improvement business. Fast forward 15 years and the businesses continue to grow and evolve.
ShelfGenie offers custom pull-out shelving solutions for existing cabinets, closets and vanities in kitchens, bathrooms, and hallway closets. Upgrading fixed shelving with Glide-Out shelving offers customers more space, easier access and better organization for their spaces, turning frustration into joy. Shelfgenie is in its 15th year of business in Eastern Massachusetts, and has helped well over 5,000 clients.
New England Closets was created in 2016 as a result of feedback from our Shelfgenie clients who insisted that we build a closet company to offer great customer service and better value than the large franchises that dominate that space. Because we are not part of a franchise system, we have no royalties, lower overhead, and we do not have someone from some far away place telling us how to operate our business. All of our products are American-made, we have a gorgeous showroom in Sudbury and our installers work out of our Woburn location.
Carpet Carousel offers a wide range of flooring solutions, ranging from wall-to-wall carpeting, area rugs, luxury vinyl, rubber floors and engineered hardwood. A fixture in Sudbury for almost 40 years, Jeff and Raffi acquired Carpet Carousel in 2020 from the original owners Shawn and Melanie Flanagan. Our goal is to continue to provide the great customer service and product selection that Shawn and Mel offered for years, and to provide a physical home for our Closet and Shelfgenie business. We have found all three businesses share a very loyal customer base, and we look forward to continuing to be part of the Sudbury community for years to come.
Outside of work, Jeff and his wife Ruth lived in Sudbury for 20 years and saw all three of his children graduate from Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School. Raffi and his wife Salpi are long-time residents of Watertown where they are raising their two high-school aged boys.
A new Economic Development Plan for Sudbury is on the horizon. Guest speakers will be Adam Burney, newly appointed Director of Planning and Development, Town Manager Andy Sheehan, and Select Board Member Jennifer Roberts.

Network with Purpose: Tools and Techniques for Productive Networking
Workshop Leader: Sandra Kearney, MSOP, CEO, Human Power Solutions
Do you dread walking into a networking meeting, or do you just love meeting new people? Do you follow up right away or do those business cards sit on your desk until you forget who they are and why you collected them?
Business networking is an effective and efficient way for businesspeople to connect, develop meaningful relationships, and grow their businesses. These achievements don’t come through a direct sales approach, however. They come from being interested in helping others, in listening, and in purposefully meeting and introducing people to one another. Participants will learn the essential ingredients for business networking, including in-person, people-centered connections and online spaces such as LinkedIn.
This workshop will help participants develop essential skills in building business relationships. You will also come away with tangible worksheets and guides for being a more effective and impactful networker. Let’s do business together!
Please join us.
